Byron Bay Writers' Festival

It's August, and that means the Writers' Festival in my little piece of the world. The Festival celebrates writers, writing and ideas and is one of the highlights of my year.
The chairs here are not up to much so I always have to take my own cushion!

All the Marquees were quick to fill up.

And there were some really interesting sculptures to look at

It was three days of wonderful weather, interesting intellectual discussion, passionate opinions and lots of laughs.

Funky Chair

Check out this funky chair I spotted in a second hand shop in Brisbane.

It was upholstered in leopard print velvet. Very luxurious.

Hmm, if only I had the space...

New Year, New Job

This is my new daily view, over the top of a shiny new coffee machine.

Even on a rainy, northcoast day, the carpark is full! The cafe is outside the local Coles/Kmart shopping centre.

And of course, the chairs. Imported from Turkey, they are really special. They are sturdy, weather proof and most importantly extremely comfy. Everybody loves them!

A cafe latte (me showing off)

A beautiful pour from a beautiful machine.

Two yummy mugs of flat white, nearly ready for thirsty customers.

Some beautiful examples of Mazzy's work

This amazing sculptue was done by Mazzy more than 20 years ago. It always had a bit of a Nefertiti feel to me.

This is one of three vessels that Mazzy made a couple years ago. Stunning.

Picture frame found at the tip, sanded back, painted on, filled with mirror. Very special.
I will put a link to Mazzy's web here when she had it up and running again.

Mazzy's Chair

This is my dear friend Mazzy. She is a talented artist living in Dorrigo in the hinterland behind Coffs Harbour. Sharing her favourite chair is her cheeky dog, a pomeranian/sausage dog cross called Hotdog.

Mazzy's favourite chair is a big comfy leather lounge chair. In the winter when the fire is blazing inside and the wind is blowing outside, it's covered with a huge rug that Mazzy knitted herself.

Mazzy in her newly finished studio. A beautiful light and spacious room for her to work in.

Her favourite chair in the studio. Sensible and for now, clean and tidy, it must be new! Not a paint spill or clay smudge in sight.

Mia's Chair

The beautiful Mia is part of my brother Bill's family. I was chatting to Mia the other day and she was full of enthusiasm for her chair. Not only is it ideal for sleeping on but it is also the best possible height to rest a bone on whilst gnawing at it.
Occasionally the Bill and Lou ridiculously feel the urge to clean the cushion. This is disasterous as not only does it take a day to dry, rendering the chair unusuable during that time, but it takes days and days to get the proper smell back. That is hours of sitting and scratching and bone chomping and flopping and getting in and out and adjusting the groove. The chair is situated under the house with an excellent view of the front gate, all the better to check out who's coming in, you never know how many pats you can con out of a visitor, when 'mum' and 'dad' are going to be home, or who's passing by, school kids are the best, they just love her!
Of course her ideal position for her chair would be the lounge room upstairs, however due to an impending arrival, she has been relegated to out doors all the time now. At least she has her chair.
The chair, as many will recognise is an Ikea classic. It was found on the 'verge' (the side of the road) by Bills brother Ian under his apartment in inner city Sydney. Bill persuaded Ian that Ian didnt need a matching pair and he passed on the chair to Bill. It was cushionless when given to Bill but his Mum, known for her flair with the sewing machine and interesting taste in wacky fabric from the throw-out bin at Spotlight, fashioned a new cushion which has since been recovered in a more sedate colour. This new covering doesn't clash so badly with Mia's beautiful coat.
Mia loves chasing balls, watching the chickens, going for walks, trying to breakout of the yard, gnawing bones, trying to play with the cats, running away from waves, Bill and Lou and anyone willing to play with her. And of course she loves her chair.

Meet Jasper and his evil claws

Meet Jasper The Cat. He belongs to Sophie, my 15yr old daughter. He is increadibly cute and very smart, but he is also exceptionally cheeky and very naughty. He as ridiculously sharp claws and, being a cat, likes to sharpen them on anything at hand, .... including....
MY FAVOURITE CHAIR!!!

Now, I know my chair wasnt in the best of conditions in the first place, it doesnt have any fabric on the back of it to begin with, however it was never as bad as this. Jasper has done his best to claw away at the remaining intact covering on the side and pull it all apart. Stuffing everywhere! Frayed ends all over the place! Poor chair.

So I did my best to do a dodgy patch up job with some heavy duty duct tape to try and hold it all together and maybe discourage that cheeky cat.

But NO!! Oh Jasper! What am I going to do with him? He does have a scartching poll of all his own after all.
